Carol Edmonson and Diana Mendieta’s 6th grade Geography class at Northeast Middle School participated in a Culminating Activity to simulate trade at the end of their 6th grade European Economics Unit. The Trade Simulation used candy to help the students experience the different aspects of trade; including voluntary, restricted, sanctions, and embargoes. The activity engaged students by giving them a hands on activity that made trade vocabulary real to students in a way they could understand; CANDY!
Each group of students were given a different amount/type of candy to simulate the different trade equities of the countries they were studying in class and then encouraged to trade with other groups. Students were able to better understand why some countries had better trading opportunities and how the different types of trade policies would benefit each country.
